The present study seeks to elucidate the epistemological foundations underlying the methodology of the “theory-oriented theologians” of the second-century Kūfan School of kalam (theology). This current of thought, represented by figures such as Hishām ibn al-Ḥakam, adopted in its theological activity an approach that may be described as “text-centred theorization.” The epistemological basis of this model both authorizes rational inquiry in theological investigation and situates theological explanation within the framework of revealed teachings.
According to this paradigm, reason (ʿaql) and revelation (waḥī) function as two harmonious sources of authority (ḥujjah). Revelation stimulates and guides reason, while reason, operating in the light of revelatory guidance, engages in systematic theorization. Drawing upon historical reports and a structural analysis of the argumentative patterns employed by the mutakallimūn of that period, the study demonstrates how this interactive epistemic model generated a distinctive methodology. This methodology differs both from the scriptural literalism associated with the Ahl al-Ḥadīth and from the rationalist orientation of the Muʿtazilah.
