The Qur'anic command "Sīrū fī al-Arḍ" (Al-Ankabut: 20) has always been considered a methodological foundation for acquiring knowledge in the Islamic tradition. This study, aiming to conduct a genealogy of this key concept, addresses the primary question of how the command to "travel through the earth" has evolved in the history of exegesis from a paradigm of "historical admonition" to "field research." The research methodology is based on a qualitative content analysis of a wide range of Qur'anic commentaries from the early centuries to the contemporary era, employing a genealogical approach to uncover semantic shifts and ruptures. The findings indicate that the understanding of this concept has passed through three main paradigms:
1) The foundational admonition-based paradigm in early exegesis, which interpreted "travel" as a journey to observe the relics of past nations and learn from their fate.
2) The paradigmatic turning points, initiated by al-Māturīdī's rationalistic interpretation (prioritizing intellectual travel) and Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī's epistemological refinement (elevating "observation" to "argumentative inquiry"), which paved the way for a departure from the historical reading. 3) The contemporary science-based paradigm, which, in response to modern challenges, redefines "travel" as scientific and field research into nature to uncover the secrets of creation. This study concludes that the evolution in the understanding of "Sīrū fī al-Arḍ" demonstrates the dynamic capacity of the Qur'anic text to inspire diverse epistemological approaches and to respond to the intellectual needs of different ages.
