Jam'-e Tashkiki as a Method in Fiqh al-'Aqa'id (Islamic Theology)
Abstract:
One type of method in reconciling contradictory narrations related to the field of 'aqa'id (beliefs) is jam'-e tashkiki (gradational harmonization). With the rules presented in usul al-fiqh (principles of jurisprudence), it is not possible to reconcile two contradictory pieces of evidence in this manner. In other words, jam'-e tashkiki relates to the realm of takwin (creation), while the other harmonization relates to the realm of tashri' (legislation), and it is obvious that the rules of takwin differ from those of tashri'. The root of this method of harmonization can be found in the philosophical issues of "fa'il bi-taskhir" (agent by subjugation), "mushakkak budan-e haqiqat-e wujud" (the gradational nature of the reality of existence), and "jam' bayn-e tashbih wa tanzih" (reconciliation between anthropomorphism and transcendence), which are results of wahdat al-wujud (unity of existence). In this article, after explaining the issue and applicable concepts, the definition of mutlaq (absolute) and the quality of resolving contradiction between two absolute pieces of evidence in usul al-fiqh are mentioned. Then, the topic of jam'-e tashkiki is presented, with several examples of this type of harmonization from verses and narrations, explaining it and whether it is tabarru'i (arbitrary) or not. Finally, the foundations of this type of harmonization are discussed.
